Beaches, babes, surf and sun (03 jan 12)

Tried surfing in Santa Barbara. Didn't get far. On New Year's Eve, went up 154, over the hill, then right on Paradise Rd, lots of camping/hiking/biking - the campsites are family friendly. In fact I moved site because of one too-friendly family in a Winnebago.

In the morning, I drove along Cielo Camino (that's 'sky road' in Spanish). Great views and skydivers. Foolishly tried to randomly drive across the mountains to the I-5 freeway - ended up down a dirt road, and an old hippie guided me out, so I ended up back in Santa Barbara then drove to Ontario via Hollywood, guided by my Google phone. The phone does occasionally say daft things like 'do a u-turn' when you're doing 70 on a freeway. I also tried to use it to guide me to a campsite. It told me I was at one, but again, I was doing 70 on a freeway. Not only that, but it led me onto a toll road going to Orange County. I had to pay, drive another million miles, u-turn, pay again on the way back, and end up staying in a hotel.

Then my flight was canceled. Luckily, I got a later one.

As they say in California, it's all good.

You know when you're in the right lane of a two-lane 'exit only' ramp, and you want to be back on the main freeway, and you have to suddenly lurch left, crossing two lanes and the triangular bit of land marked by white stripes, covered in garbage, where the exit ramp departs from the freeway? Well I did that TWICE. LA driving! Woohoo!
