Las Vegas UZI (24 feb 09)

The campsite at Red Rocks was very open and windy. The lights of Vegas illuminate the canyon walls at night - nice - ride into town - Alta Rd - bike lane all the way.

I thought real Roman architecture was showy and vulgar 'til I saw Caesar's Palace.

'The Strip' is a street called, informatively, 'Las Vegas', and also, 'Fourth Street'. It is like Oxford Street in London, except Oxford means something - the street which goes to Oxford. Las Vegas has some interesting architecture. Caesar's Palace does not, but the Brain Institute by Frank Gehry shurazhellduz - ubechorfknassonit - YO!

My writing style is heading in the same direction as Gehry's architecture. Butnotzgud. Move along, Burroughs. Eat your heart out, Joyce. My aunt Joyce, that is, not James Joyce. You laugh? Have you read her Christmas cards?

There are all these, like, wedding chapels which do Elvis-style weddings named after old bags like Joan Collins, a show with people acting Barbara Streisand and Frank Sinatra, a retrospective of Franki Valli - no, I've never heard of any of these crooners either, I'm far too young - M.I.A. is more up my alley. And it's difficult to find a motel with internet! Still I might come back in early May for the Rails conference. I'll stay at the Tod Motel, which is where I am currently located at.

I just went to an old-fashioned barber shop, then a sixties-style café. All the men in the barber's were older than me. One was just off to his aunt's 100th birthday. One looked, talked and walked just like John McCain, the defeated candidate in the recent election (which Obama, our new black president, won). One of the barbers met a long-lost school buddy - they finished high school in 1960, ten years before I did. They must have seen Las Vegas grow from an oasis to a fair-sized city.

I just went to a shooting range in downtown Vegas and fired an Uzi on full-auto. IS THIS a Great COUNTRY or WHAT!!!!?
