Well, you know what kinda eyes she got (13 jan 09)

A sunnier ride today, from Delano to Bakersfield.

The road east from Delano turns into agricultural tracks before it reaches highway 65. The terrain changes too - it starts getting hilly. It was pleasant to find how my bike can handle rough roads, because of its shock absorbers on both wheels. It was also encouraging to discover I'm getting a bit fitter - I can start the bike facing uphill now!

I went through orange groves and beehives - idyllic until a tractor sprayed me with insecticide, and this did not deter the bees from following me. Then I came across the oilfield north of Bakersfield - small 'nodding donkey' oil pumps in the middle of fields. Today was a lot more interesting than yesterday, the tedium of dead-straight highway 43 in the fog - it was like a Becket play.

By the way, the picture is of the most distant object in the universe, over thirteen billion light years away.
